Oral acetylcysteine
- Identical in bioavailability to cysteine precursors
- Solution is usually mixed with another liquid
- Such as cola to decrease nausea and vomiting [2]
- Drink the medication within 1 hour of mixing
- Tell your doctor if you vomit within 1 hour after taking it [2]
I.v.
- 3% to 6% of people severe, anaphylaxis-like allergic reaction
- May include extreme breathing difficulty (due to bronchospasm)
- Decrease in blood pressure
- Rash
- Angioedema
- Nausea and vomiting [1]
- Repeated doses i.v. acetylcysteine
- Allergic reactions to progressively worsen [1]
Overdosage
- Large doses causing nausea
- Oral overdosage could result in side effects such as nausea, vomiting and other gastrointestinal symptoms [4]
- Nausea can occur for a few minutes within an hour of taking two or three 600 mg pills on an empty stomach.
- Appears to be a safe nutrient as long as the dosage is kept to less than 500 mg
- Has anticoagulant and platelet-inhibiting properties [4]
- Rare side effects could include bronchospasm
- More likely when used by the intravenous route [4]
