- Uses additional fermentation to replace part of the later chemical stages [12]
- Estimated at approximately 110,000 tonnes annually in 2000
- Main producers were

- DSM plant in Scotland
- World price of vitamin C rose sharply in 2008
- Result of rises in basic food prices
- Anticipation of a stoppage of the two Chinese plants
