Early stages
- Photoreceptors are mostly damaged in the parafovea.
- Presence of drusen and retinal pigmentary abnormalities;
Late ARMD
- Dry ARMD
- Geographic atrophy of the retinal pigmentary epithelium in the absence of neovascular ARMD
- Neovascular ARMD
- Detachment of the retinal pigment epithelium, hemorrhages, and/or scars
Hard drusen
- May induce atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium and choriocapillary layer
Soft drusen
- May aggregate into clusters
- Cause exudative macular degeneration
- Later can induce the detachment of the neuroepithelium
