- Separation of the neurosensory retina (NSR) from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)
- Derived from neuroectoderm that lines the optic vesicle during embryogenesis
- No real anatomic junctions form between the cells of the two layers
- Forces of attachment of the NSR to RPE are weak
- Once overwhelmed, a retinal detachment occurs that reestablishes the potential space between the two layers [1]
- Sight threatening condition
- One of the few ocular emergencies [1]
- All types of retinal detachment have one in common
- Accumulation of subretinal fluid
- Four major types of retinal detachment:
- Rhegmatogenous,
- Traction,
- Exudative
- Serous
- Combined traction-rhegmatogenous [1]
